Refreshing, light (4.8%) and rich in taste. The typical Westmalle fruit aromas are immediately noticeable, and the body is surprising for a beer of this alcohol content.
The Extra is brewed within the walls of the Trappist abbey with pure water from dozens of metres below the abbey, barley malt, 5 types of hops and the unique Westmalle yeast. This yeast allows the beer to ferment 3 times. The first time during the main fermentation, a second time during the maturation and a third time in the bottle. This is how it gets its rich, full taste.
It is one of the oldest beers in the brewery. In 1836, the monks brewed the first light and tasty beer for their own use. Extra was born out of this tradition. It is only recently that Extra has become available outside the abbey.
